Brainstorm Ideas

What makes a good part-time business? Fortunately today, technology has eliminated many barriers to starting a business. Choose something that you enjoy doing that other people will benefit from. Several ideas include: staging homes, building websites, creating resumes, online marketing, podcasting, local business consulting, virtual assisting, tutoring, blogging, and the list doesn’t stop there. Using your talents to help those less talented in those areas is a great way to get your business off the ground.

Planning

Like with starting any type of business you will want to create a business plan. Set achievable goals and be sure that you aren’t overbooking yourself to this business especially if you have a full-time job. The idea of a part-time business is to not be so overwhelmed by it that it isn’t fun for you. If your business is something you get excited about, you will want to rein that excitement in and remain realistic. Think every step through before committing.

Dedicate a space in your home to work on your business. This will give you the sense that the business is there, but you don’t have to run in straight from your full-time job and go to your second job. You can even get your family involved in small tasks that can be completed for the business.

Growing

At first, this business does not have to be shared with your full-time employer, but if it seems like you are going to be successful you will want to have your employer’s support. Be sure though to check your employment contract to be sure there is no potential conflict of interest.

With this small business, you may have hit on something big. That’s when you will need to decide if you want to create a full-time enterprise. Before you decide if this is a full-time venture, you will want to ask yourself two questions: Do all the finances add up? And what does your gut tell you? It’s okay to take that time to decide if this small venture of yours can become a full-time gig. Contact Carolina Money Minders for more help with your small business!
